How Do Online Pediatrician Appointments Work?
Once you select your pediatric virtual primary care provider and schedule your first appointment, here’s what you can expect.
Before your visit
15 minutes before your child’s visit, choose a private, well-lit space where you can talk openly. Log in to MyAtriumHealth by smartphone, tablet or computer and place your device on a stable surface so you and your child are visible. Do not join the visit while driving.
During your visit
Each visit is customized to your child’s unique needs. Depending on the reason for their visit, your child’s virtual provider may ask how your child is feeling, explain recent labs and testing, and examine physical symptoms.
After your visit
At the end of your visit, your pediatric provider will review the next steps for your child’s care. They’ll also coordinate any follow-up visits, if needed.
For the best experience, ensure you have a strong internet connection and your device’s camera, microphone and speakers are working as they should. You might also need your insurance card and a form of photo identification.

Well visits for ages 4-17 are hybrid, meaning they include both a virtual and an in-person appointment. This gives you the convenience of having a pediatric virtual primary care provider, with easy coordination with an in-person care team.
Well visits must be scheduled by phone. Here’s what to expect:
- Schedule your appointments: Call us at 704-468-0350. First, we’ll schedule your child’s video visit with their pediatric virtual primary care provider, followed by an in-person visit within two weeks. The in-person exam will take place at a participating Atrium Health Levine Children’s location near you. There’s one charge for both appointments.
- Virtual visit: During this visit, your child’s pediatric virtual primary care provider will review their overall health, including medications, family history and any current concerns. They’ll also provide age-specific health education.
- In-person visit: The in-person provider will check your child’s vitals, complete a physical exam and take care of any needed labs or vaccinations. These will be coordinated ahead of time with your pediatric virtual primary care provider.
- After-visit summary: Once the in-person visit is complete, your child’s health record will be updated in MyAtriumHealth. Your pediatric virtual primary care provider will follow up if there’s anything to review from the physical exam.

Children under age 18 can receive care from a virtual pediatric provider, as long as a parent or guardian is present during the video visit. Parents or guardians can request video visits for children ages 0-17. Learn more about proxy/dependent care.

Unlike other types of pediatric telehealth visits we offer – where you connect with a telemedicine doctor or advanced practice professional for sick visits or one-time medical needs – you’re establishing ongoing care for your child with a virtual pediatrician. It helps to be prepared before your child’s video visit. Have these items ready in case the provider asks for them:
- List of your child’s medications, supplements or vitamins, including dosage
- Your child’s recent vitals, if available, such as weight and temperature
- Details about your child’s symptoms, including when they started, what helps or worsens them, and photos, if applicable
