What is Pediatric Telehealth?

Pediatric telehealth – sometimes called pediatric telemedicine – makes it easy to find care for your child virtually, without having to leave home. Using your phone, tablet or computer, you can connect with a trusted provider over video or secure e-visit messaging to get a diagnosis, ask questions or manage your child’s ongoing, routine care.

FAQs About Pediatric Telemedicine

What types of telehealth visits are available for kids?

With pediatric telehealth, you have choices when it comes to how you manage your child’s health. Telehealth visit options for ages 0-17 include:

  • Establishing a new relationship with a pediatric virtual primary care provider, where all your child’s ongoing health care appointments will be video visits offered 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. From sick visits and well visits to managing chronic diseases, your child’s virtual pediatric provider is your go-to for any health need.
  • Connecting with an expert medical provider 24/7 for urgent care diagnosis and treatment with a face-to-face video visit for non-life-threatening illnesses or minor injuries. Atrium Health Levine Children’s pediatric providers are available 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week.
  • Seeing your in-person doctor virtually for sick visits or follow-ups through scheduled care visits.
  • For kids between the ages of 0-12, you can securely message their existing provider by completing a quick questionnaire about the minor condition and illness they’re experiencing. You’ll receive a diagnosis and treatment plan within 24 hours. Start with Symptom Checker first to see if a pediatric eVisit is right for your child.
Can I use telehealth when we’re traveling?

When using one of our pediatric telehealth offerings, you’ll need to be physically located in North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia at the time of your visit.

Can video visits be used for all types of primary care?

There’s a lot of care we can provide over video, but you’ll still need to come in person for physical exams and lab work. Sometimes during your video visit, your provider will decide it’s best to see your child in person. If this happens, you won’t be charged for the video visit.

Do I need an appointment?

No appointment is needed for a 24/7 urgent care video visit. However, if you prefer to see your child’s established in-person pediatrician or pediatric virtual primary care provider, you can use MyAtriumHealth to schedule a video visit. You can also try Symptom Checker to see if an eVisit with your child’s doctor might be right for you.

Are telehealth visits secure?

Yes, Atrium Health uses a patented system to make sure every video visit is HIPAA compliant, secure and confidential.

What will I need for my child’s virtual visit?

All you need is a strong internet connection and smartphone, tablet or computer with a microphone and camera. You might also need your insurance card and a form of photo identification.

You’ll also need a MyAtriumHealth account – this is our free and secure patient portal, where you’ll start video visits, communicate with your child’s provider and request refills.

With any telehealth visit for kids, you’ll need to be their legally authorized representative if they’re under the age of 17. Teens who are age 13 and older may have their own MyAtriumHealth account. Learn more about proxy/dependent access.

Are video visits covered by insurance?

Video visits are often the same price as office visits. Insurance coverage varies, and services may be subject to any applicable copays, coinsurance and deductibles within your health plan. Please call your insurance provider for more information on your specific plan coverage.
