Children’s Hospital Outpatient Procedural Services (CHOPS) is located at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital in Macon, GA. There, we offer a safe, more convenient way for children of all ages to get care in an outpatient setting. This means your child can get scans, tests, diagnostic procedures, medicine infusions and blood transfusions, without staying overnight in the hospital.
Our goal is to help our patients and their families maintain typical life activities while getting the medical care they need. Dedicated to caring for you and your family, we’re here to answer questions and make your experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. This includes with flexible appointment scheduling and help with insurance, including preauthorization.
As family, you’re an important part of your child’s care team. That’s why we encourage you to stay with your child throughout treatment. To protect our patients with weakened immune systems, we ask that only healthy siblings 12 years of age or older visit the treatment area.
- Blood transfusions
- Blood draws for laboratory work or therapeutic phlebotomy
- Dressing changes
- Lumbar punctures
- Medication infusions
- Placing nasogastric (NG) tubes or pH probes
- Placing intravenous lines (ex: PICC or midline)
Our intravenous (IV) infusion services treat children with a variety of illnesses and therapeutic needs, such as Crohn’s disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, immunodeficiency, and others. Services are provided in a comforting, family-centered environment. We strive to help meet the unique emotional, developmental and cultural needs of each child and family.
- Blood products, such as red blood cells or platelets
- Chemotherapy to treat cancer
- Antibiotics or medication infusions
- Biotherapies to treat Crohn’s or other rheumatologic conditions
- Immunoglobulin (IVIG)
- Hydration therapy
Additionally, our nurses are certified by the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses (APHON). This certification is given to those with special knowledge of children’s cancer and blood disorders.
Sometimes, children need to be sedated for procedures, scans or other diagnostic tests. Sedation is when medicine is used to help your child relax or fall asleep. If your child needs to be sedated, our specialized pediatric sedation team strives to provide high-quality, safe and efficient care with the most child-friendly experience possible.
Our sedation team includes pediatric critical care doctors, pediatric sedation nurses and child life specialists. Together, they provide medications and sedation methods specific to your child based on their:
- Age
- Developmental stage
- Pre-existing medical conditions
- Type of scan, test or diagnostic procedure
A child life specialist can help during your visit by providing toys, crafts or games to pass the time. They can also help your child understand the reason for their visit and offer education and support for any procedures.
