Patient Stories: Payton & Sawyer

Kacie knew something was wrong when she felt severe pain 30 weeks into her pregnancy. Doctors discovered a cancerous mass on one of her ovaries. In June 2020, she gave birth to identical twin girls, Payton (3 pounds, 10 ounces) and Sawyer (3 pounds, 14 ounces), via emergency c-section, during which doctors removed the mass. After 48 days in the neonatal intensive care unit at Atrium Health Navicent’s Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital, her twins came home, where they are now healthy and active toddlers in Macon. “Having a cancer diagnosis and twins at the same time is not ideal,” Kacie says, “but I knew the nurses were giving my girls the attention and motherly love that they needed.”
